Americans heading out for Memorial Day weekend are facing some of the highest gas prices seen in years, but that hasn’t stopped millions from packing their cars and hitting the highway.
According to the latest projections from the AAA, nearly 45 million Americans are expected to travel at least 50 miles from home during the holiday weekend, setting a new Memorial Day travel record. Of those travelers, more than 39 million are expected to drive.
The surge in travel demand comes despite a sharp rise in fuel costs across the country. National average gas prices are hovering around $4.50 per gallon, marking the highest Memorial Day fuel prices since the summer of 2022.
Industry analysts say the spike is being fueled by ongoing instability in global energy markets, particularly disruptions tied to conflict in the Middle East and concerns over oil supply routes. Rising crude oil prices have pushed fuel costs upward just as the summer travel season begins.
Drivers on the West Coast are seeing the steepest prices. In California, average gas prices have climbed above $6 per gallon, while several other states are reporting averages exceeding $5.
Despite the financial strain, many Americans appear unwilling to cancel long-awaited holiday plans.
“Travel demand remains strong, and despite higher fuel prices, many people are prioritizing leisure travel during holiday breaks,” said Stacey Barber, Vice President of AAA Travel.
Travel experts say many families likely finalized vacation plans before fuel prices surged, making cancellations less likely. Others are choosing shorter road trips, splitting fuel costs, or seeking cheaper accommodations to offset rising transportation expenses.
The increase in gasoline prices is also expected to have broader economic effects. Higher diesel prices are raising shipping and freight costs, which could eventually lead to increased prices for consumer goods and services nationwide.
Meanwhile, officials are encouraging travelers to prepare for heavy traffic and longer travel times. AAA recommends drivers check tire pressure, batteries, and fluid levels before departing, noting that roadside assistance calls typically spike during major holiday weekends.
