Claims about a simple homemade drink that can “clear blocked arteries” in just one glass are spreading quickly online. While some ingredients used in these drinks may be nutritious, no homemade juice or remedy has been proven to remove arterial plaque overnight or work 10 times better than cholesterol-lowering medication.
The good news is that there are evidence-based ways to protect your arteries and reduce cardiovascular risk—especially after age 60.
What Actually Causes “Blocked” Arteries?
Arteries can gradually narrow because of atherosclerosis, a process in which cholesterol, fats, calcium and other substances accumulate within artery walls.
This process can develop over many years and may increase the risk of:
- Heart attack
- Stroke
- Peripheral artery disease
- Chest pain and reduced blood flow
A glass of juice cannot simply wash this buildup away.
What About Lemon, Ginger, Garlic or Other Home Remedies?
Ingredients such as lemon, ginger and garlic can certainly be included in a healthy diet. They contain various nutrients and plant compounds, and some research suggests that particular foods may have modest effects on cardiovascular risk factors.
But that’s very different from saying they “clear blocked arteries.”
If you already take cholesterol medication, don’t replace it with a homemade drink without discussing it with your doctor.
